RE: Question Regarding Deming's Role in WW2 Production

Craig,
I understand there was a meeting where President Roosevelt called in
Deming and Shewart and charged them with the responsibility of
organizing our WWII war production effort, i.e., the training of the
managers who would be responsible. I think I got that from the books of
members of the DEN. I sure hope who ever that was discovers this string
and contributes to this discussion.

I understand that a big reason for the success of Deming and Shewart is
that the preWWII managers were called into uniformed service and were
thus out of the way of preventing them from being successful. Deming
and Shewart were left with inexperienced/green managers and 'Rosie the
Riveters' and their male equivalents.

Their success was noticed by members of JUSE (Union of Japanese
Scientists and Engineers) they in turn went to General MacArthur and
said to him, 'get these men over here'. He did, they listened and
learned, the rest is history. Out of destruction was grown the 2nd
largest economy in the world: Japan.

I must warn you I am a fabulist/i.e.., creator of fables by trade. I am
a Volkswagen salesman. But, I think there essential truths in the story
I just told and I think I got these truths from members of the DEN. I
sure hope they respond. I want to get the fable right.
Best,
Will
