As the control sheet lays bare each essential quality of a given subject =
matter, it enables the teacher to address the precise academic needs of =
a given student. Marvelous things then begin to happen.  Sampling and =
immediate feedback intervene to reduce the compounding of errors. The =
student begins to ask questions. He seeks new assignments. He stops =
competing and comparing and looks more to the art and science of the =
task at hand.  The more he advances along the taxonomy the more =
authoritative he becomes to his peers.  Gradually, he, himself, begins =
advising beginning students. Unfettered by quizzes, tests, midterms, =
GPA's, final exams, and percentile rankings, he comes to view himself as =
a member of a genuine learning community.=20
