I've seen him on several occasions shun questions about examples of good
practice. What was going through

Could it be as simple as a theory should be supported by more than one data
point (example)? The quote is not in the plural; examples.
The Merriam Webster Dictionary, Theory: a plausible or scientifically
acceptable general principle offered to explain observed facts.
Now, what is an "observed fact"? (I ask this rhetorically.)
