myron's story is a nice example of the difference between management &
leadership
the person most associated with using this example is stephen covey
in 1995 i was fortunate to meet stephen and also (separately) peter
scholtes - peter drew my attention to the possibility of seeing management
and leadership as separate systems (or processes)
this led me to use the phrases managing and leading as a continual reminder
of this - the processes of managing and leading
with help from collagues we have now defined these as
MANAGING is a process or system or relationship
aimed at producing predictability, stability and order.
LEADING is a process or system or relationship
aimed at producing change to bring about a new reality
the respective purposes being to:
(a) make things (change) happen, and
(b) maintain a level of comfort based upon some aspects of life being
ordered and stable/ predictable, as a base for being able to do (a) make
things happen.
we have also mapped the two processes using flowcharts
i wonder what denizens can add or subtract from these definitions?
