Re: Stephen W. Hawking

Dear Reinaldo, and all DEN'izens! Oslo, December 1st, 2002

Today I received a posting dated November 22nd 2002, from
Reinaldo Ramirez, where he forwarded some Dr. Hawking's
statements about;

one contra-example destroys the related theory/hyphothesis, while
no number of examples can prove it,

asking for the relation to Demings theory.

Now I have searched this morning both through Out of Crisis and
The New Economics for the example I know is there somewhere;

the cock which is crowing out every morning, believing he is the
cause of the sun going up, until he one days forgets to crow,
and the sun still stands up. He had to change his theory!

What page in which of these books have I read this a hundred
times before!!?? (my eyes stand in their way, this morning...)

Reinaldo, according to my knowledge of Demings Theory,
Hawking is restating Deming. Or, actually, I think they are
both restating a number of earlier thinkers. (As most of us
are).

The questions of the Scottish philosopher David Hume
(1711-1776) on INDUCTION is for example related;

Any past experiences, any history, cannot be used to
securely predict the unobserved, i.e. future outcomes.
