Special cause / Common cause

Hello Denizens,
This is my maiden attempt in posting a message in this esteemed group...
As a Supply development Engineer for the past decade, I noticed something
interesting...
I thought I would share this with the group / get to know if Dr Deming has
detailed this in any of his works...
A special cause in the Process level, stems from a possible common cause in
the 'System' level... e.g. A broken mold pin causing a reject in the lot is
certainly a special cause for the process, I noticed that this pin breakage
occurred in some other mold some other time and caused another ' special
cause' for that particular mold... The common cause was the Mold management
system inadequacy... This I noticed over time in almost all types of
manufacturing processes.
So if we can apply the principles of Induction, can we say that any 'special
cause' in a process stems form a common cause in the System; and if we can
find a 'level' above Systems - say Management Policy, any special causes in
System stems from a common cause in the Management policy, so on....? -
(where does it end? - Karma??!!)
No wonder Dr Deming insists so much on Quality of Management...
Any thoughts?
Regards,
M.K.Ramanujam,
Dy Manager - Supply Development,
Visteon India.
