For what it's worth:

In a PBS video done in 1990, the good doctor talks about the value of
optimizing a system. When asked to give an example, he describes a
symphony orchestra.  He says it is not the job of a musician to play as
loud as he can (I don't remember the exact words).One of the main themes
in this video is "optimizing the system" not the individual.

If there is interest, I would be willing to run the tape and try to
record his exact words.
