Map of Theory
I first heard the term "Map of
Theory" from Dr. Joyce Orsini. I have been slow to internalize the meaning.
I wanted some time to test the term and to make it my own.
I offer the use of the term "Map of Theory" as a good way to describe the
body of work of Dr. W. Edwards Deming. However, I would like to hear other
people's opinion, possibly creating a more descriptive term.
Dr. Deming gathered theories and philosophies from many diverse fields of
study. Listening and learning from experts. Dr Deming synthesizing what he
learned for use as a guide for managing organization. He called his guide
"The System of Profound Knowledge(tm)"
>From my experience and limited research, I am not certain about what
original theories and philosophies Dr. Deming contributed to SoPK and what
is an adaptation of other people's work. Quite frankly, someone who can put
together new associations or transforms concepts into an actionable system,
contributes as much to society as the person who creates an original
thought.
SoPK is not a 'how to', not a sequence of steps. SoPK is collection or
synthesis of theories. SoPK is the last manifestation of Dr. Deming's quest
to help people manage organizations, to help society in the future. SoPK is
a guide that shows many different paths. Each path dependent on the others
to understand an entire region. Each path enriching the travel experience.
I prefer describing the SoPK guide by using the analogy of a road map. A
map that lays out what is ahead, a map that conveys information, but does
not tell the best way to arrive at a destination. A map that helps an
individual create a truly unique travel experience.
I argue that SoPK is a guide, a MAP OF THEORY to help the transformation.
OK, now lets hear your perspective.

p.s. Does this argument relegate Dr. Deming to the status of 'map maker?'
Similar to America who mapped the new world. America did not create the new
world, nor discover it. However he created the first usable map of the new
world and has two continents named after him. Hmmm.
