Tier 1 suppliers where and in some cases required to provide control charts with their products along with the Cpk index number. It is one thing to make the control chart and put it in the box with the product - another to use the control charts to understand variation and improve. Control charts are part of the automotive industry - you typically see them at the end of the manufacturing line along with line graphs and a lot of bar charts. You see in the last 5 years a significant deployment of personnel devoted to executing the Red X tactics of Shainin. There are still educational efforts devoted to understanding variation and constructing control charts and Shainin. They have some similarities, they have some differences. They are both devoted to reducing variability and improving quality.
