On variation. Variation cuts two ways: 
1. Yes, we do want to reduce variation related to errors, not conforming to 
the customer's requirements. 
2. And_we need to appreciate that variation of other sorts are as necessary 
to healthy work and organizations as it is to maintaining the health of any 
ecology.
No variation in work can lead not only to more errors being made due to 
boredom and lack of attention. It can also create unnecessary stress that 
saps the physical health of workers.
A lack of variation in experience, interests, perspective in a group charged 
with investigating how to reduce variation in critical work processes -- grin 
-- can reduce the probability that the group will be very innovative in 
looking for new and different ways to collect and analyze data, or come up 
with new solutions.

So to paraphrase: Variation is Dead! Long Live Variation! Ned Hamson
