On variation. Variation cuts two ways:
1. Yes, we do want to reduce variation related to errors, not conforming to
the customer's requirements.
2. And_we need to appreciate that variation of other sorts are as necessary
to healthy work and organizations as it is to maintaining the health of any
ecology.
No variation in work can lead not only to more errors being made due to
boredom and lack of attention. It can also create unnecessary stress that
saps the physical health of workers.
A lack of variation in experience, interests, perspective in a group charged
with investigating how to reduce variation in critical work processes -- grin
-- can reduce the probability that the group will be very innovative in
looking for new and different ways to collect and analyze data, or come up
with new solutions.
So to paraphrase: Variation is Dead! Long Live Variation! Ned Hamson
