I'd say that reducing variation in a production process is desirable.
Increasing variety and diversity of experience, interests, and perspectives
is also desirable.
But "variation" and "variety" mean different things. An electronics company
may manufacture a variety of product lines such as radios, MP3 players,
wide-screen TVs, etc., and there may be a variety of models within each
line. That's perfectly fine, as long as that's what the market is willing to
support. Wide variation within the process used to manufacture any one of
them is undesirable.
