The admonition, "reduce variation", applies to processes which are

Tim agrees, and so do I. But in your response were you confusing variation
with variety? A great chef will conquer variation. He will serve a certain
meal night after night with little variation. But he will provide variety
for his customers. Our universities look for variety in approaches to a
subject or a problem.

There are a variety of routes between LA and Paris. But I hope that a
certain route with certain flights produces a predictable outcome with
little variation.

At the end of the day, it seems the issue is the use of works, and their
definition. Somehow, I reckon Tim was on the correct track.

Cheerio!

John and Tim
