RE: Six Sigma and The Empirical Rule

"Six Sigma" refer to a one-sided data spread (either to the right or left of the mean) for a total of 12 sigma data dispersion range. The goal of Six Sigma is to reduce variation (sigma) in order to obtain a defect rate very close to zero. Assuming that sigma is small enough so that specification limits are at +/- 6 sigma around the mean, 2 parts per billion are outside +/- 6 sigma. Six Sigma is a concept invented by Motorola in order to reduce variation to increase quality and reduce costs.
