BAY AREA DEMING USERS GROUP NEWSLETTER
Our next meeting is on Monday, 5 May 2003 from 6:00-8:30pm,
at Sun Microsystems in Menlo Park at the intersection of
Willow Road and Highway 84. Detailed directions available
below.
PLANNED PROGRAMS:
Please note that BADUG meetings are always open to all
interested parties. Dr. Deming's teaching extended far
beyond the traditional confines of quality. Consider
inviting a friend or work associate who might share your
interest in learning about, and discussing, innovative and
effective theories regarding organizations, systems and
management.
5 May: "What's next for BADUG?" At the February session,
I announced my intentions to step away from the tasks of
coordinating BADUG's activities. This session will be an
opportunity for discussion and to make plans regarding how
people would like to shape the future of BADUG.
2 June: For our last planned session, we will view and
discuss the video, "How Everyone Wins: Finding Joy,
Meaning, and Profit in the Workplace." This one-hour
1998 public television history of the quality revolution
in America features Lloyd Dobyns and Clare Crawford-Mason.
Emphasis is placed on the theories of Dr. Deming and Dr.
Russell Ackoff. The narrators review their experiences
over the past 20 years and discuss which management
innovations have worked and which have not. The viewer
learns what we must do to prosper and survive. Please
contact Dan R. by May 15th to let us know of your
attendance at this session.

April Systems Thinking Study Group Notes:
Myron Tribus shared with the group an overview of
Dr. Reuven Feuerstein's work, as well as providing a few
new and exciting insights he has gained in his continued
study of the latest findings in brain research. He also
shared a bit of wisdom: "We live only as long as we are
learning, learn only as long as it's interesting, and
find it interesting only as long as it's fun!" As Myron
guided us through a group exercise in the process of
mediated learning, we certainly had a good time as we
also learned something about the concept.
A key message I came away with was that there are clear
and effective methods for developing our cognitive
abilities. Also, intelligence - how you use your brain -
is not intrinsic, is not static, and develops as a result
of interaction with others. Our culture and processes
greatly underestimate the potential of those afflicted
by brain injury/disease, pigeon-holed by so-called
intelligence quotient profiling, or otherwise categorized
as "learning disabled."
For more information on the topic, Myron suggests starting
with a read of "On Feuerstein's Instrumental Enrichment",
a collection edited by Meir Ben-Hur. Many more resources
are referenced at the International Center for the
Enhancement of Learning Potential website - www.icelp.org
