Advise Needed from Deming Group

Hello Group:

The subject of incentives and a whole host of other things that result in
suboptimization is a subject I speak on regularly to a number of groups.
Lately I have entered into more of a dialog with the group and found this
to be very effective. I simply introduce the subject: Crashing with the
Nose Up, explain what this is and that here are some things I consider
destructive and then simply ask the group; what do you want to talk about.
Immediately hands go up and we are off to the races. In the last group I
spoke to some people became quite worked up and stood and denounced the
deregulation of AT&T, and the airlines as not being in the public interest.
This without any prompting from me.

Crashing With the Nose Up is about things companies do in the sincere
belief that they are driving performance. What is happening instead is
that they are creating a more adversarial working environment that
underminds teamwork and makes it more difficult for the company to focus
its energy on the customer.

These things include: Performance appraisals, management by the numbers
(MBO'.), Ranking of people, plants, shifts, you name it; reward and
recognition programs, commission pay, quotas, etc..
