I am sure that a lot of people will be advising Mike that the person to read
on the subject on pay for performance is Alfie Kohn - his book "Punished by
Rewards"

Alfie Kohn gave a presentation to The British Deming Association  on "Why
Performance Based Pay Cannot Work"  1997 - We here in Aberdeen have been
able to get copies of this audio tape and we give a copy to our chief
executives - It really catches their attention -  the tape has made a major
contribution to getting executives to move their thinking away from
extrinsic motivators (pay) and onto consideration of intrinsic motivation
( pride)
