Re: Balanced Scorecard
I am a balanced Scorecard fan. However, my reason for my enthusiasm lies
with its use to me as a software systems designer, the balanced scorecard,
with its emphasis on logical grouping of performance measures is a
wondierfully useful means of defining information delivery. The big issue
of course is where the data is to be collected that can be turned into the
information managers need. IMO, this is one of the big holes with the
balanced scorecard.
A second hole is that while the scorecard is percieved by many people as one
of the more useful and innovative managemeent tools, is that nobody really
seems to know how to build one or more appropriately a set of scorecards
that can be used throughout an organisation either as an independent device,
or as part of a set of structured and cohesive scorecards that form part of
the information structure of an organisation.
To my mind, the design of a set of scorecards depends entirely on a
co-ordinated management planning method, which lends itself to a "systems"
view of the world, hich can also be understod by IS designers and mapped
into their systems design approaches. Which is why I was drawn to Deming.
I have a couple of slide shows which are in the public domain that describe
some of the factors that I think should be taken into consideration when
designing cards, feel free to download and view them and get back to me if
you have any comments. I have been told by a variety of people that they
make some aspect of scorecard design clearer. I would appreciate opinion
and comment so I can improve them.
they can be downloaded from:
