I am encouraged, as an educator, that quality professionals in business and
industry seek clarification of such fundamental terms as Knowledge, data,
and information, and that they are concerned about real meaning and
learning--not just textbook stuff.
It happens that blue-ribbon research was done by a group of educators
chaired by Benjamin S. Bloom. These educators asked similar questions.
With Bloom the editor, this group of educators published the landmark study
titled: Taxonomy of Educational Objectives, Handbook, 1: Cognitive Domain.
New York: Longman, 1956. Bloom's contribution to education parallels and
equals that of Deming's in business and industry.

[Moderator's Note: Personal opinion... I have long felt that many who
miss Dr. Deming's teachings have looked *only* at addressing the cognitive
domain (which Bloom does a great job of explaining in the referenced
taxonomy). I fel that much of Dr. Deming's message is directed at the
affective domain - which is typically neglected. ]
