RE: The Magellan Project (tampering)

To me tampering is acting upon something without an underlying, rationale
theory that the action will have success. "Don't just stand there, do
something" would be typical of tampering. There are many of us who have the
theory that competition is a cause of many of the "problems" we see out
there. This may be through personal experiences or through reading others'
works (Alfie Kohn comes to mind). So, if a company (or an individual such
as a parent) decided to embark on these two suggestions, they would be doing
it with a theory that appears to have some credibility behind it. Certainly
we have not heard of any companies going bankrupt for lack of
performance-related pay. Judging by all of the attempts to create (and
repeatedly change) pay-for-performance systems, there does not appear to be
much supporting evidence that it works.
