I haven't heard of profile monitoring before, can you please point to some

This sounds like an application of "profile monitoring".

In these applications, there is a relationship between two or more variables
that best describes the quality of a product or process.  The usual
univariate and multivariate SPC methods cannot be applied directly in these
cases.
