RE: Aberdeen - 5 year vision and conference
Gordon,
I very much admire your intent and would love to contribute, along the
creative lines you describe.
When I joined a distinctively different management consultancy in 1998 (now,
sadly, defunct), we had a culture geared to help our consultants in any
circumstance.
So, if I had to meet a new client HR Director tomorrow, say, it was OK for
me to send a collective voicemail message to colleagues saying something
like, "I'm meeting a new HR Director tomorrow and know almost nothing about
X [insert topic]. Is there anyone who can help?"
Back would come everything anyone could possibly want to know about this
particular topic. The confidence of the HR Director would be secured, and
great results would eventually flow from the project.
Over time, though, this culture eroded. Messages became more like, "I'm
meeting a new HR Director tomorrow to talk about [insert topic], and we
already have a world-class presentation to offer. Is there anyone out there,
perhaps, who knows what lies beyond 'world class'?"
After you've responded to several messages of this ilk, motivation begins to
pale.
Why am I saying this?
The answer is that I've been privileged to experience a better way of
sharing experience and would very much like to share my experience with
others.
Regards as ever,
Alan
