Dear Colin Cherry,
You are such a breath of fresh air. I am so glad you came to this board
(The DEN) that so many have devoted so much time to.
I also bought a Japanese (Yamaha) Motorcycle just for the reason you gave:
reliability. It is beautiful too. In fact I am going to ride it in April
from Oklahoma City to Los Angeles to attend the In2:Inthinking Forum (
http://in2in.org/forums/2005/index.shtml ). Hope to see you there.
You ask the critical question, "Why do some companies-even world famous
companies , screw up badly?" and follow it with "The world still needs
Deming badly!" This question and this statement needs to be followed with
WED's famous question, "By what method?" See you in Los Angeles in April as
we seek to answer this question. The title of the Formum is, "Daring to
Lead: Influencing Better Thinking for a Better Future."
You are a breath of fresh air.

Subject: Deming in Japan
Dear Sirs,
I have been fortunate to have made several trips to Japan, during the past
25 years.
My interest in Japanese manufacturing began around the mid 1960's when I
bought a Honda motorcycle. This motorcycle, which I still own today is so
reliable, durable-the bottom engine has never been dismantled! It never
leaks oil, is quiet, in fact it was so well made I decided to go to Japan to
see for myself just how a company like Honda produces such excellence in
their products.
My first visit to Japan was way back in 1979!
Since this first trip, I have visited Toyota Motor Corporation, Suzuki Motor
Corporation, Matsushita Electric, JUSE Headquaters, Honda Motor Company
Headquaters, plus many more organisations, learning all the time the Deming
style of leadership and Quality system.
In 2003, I was invited to the Deming Prize Ceremony, held in Tokyo. This
brought it fully home to me the powerful message that Quality is the focus
of all successful companies-NOT sheer profit at the expense of workers.
So, with this in mind, Why do some companies-even world famous companies ,
screw up badly?
I recently returned from my most recent trip to China and Japan, using what
I thought was the Worlds' Favourite Airline! This airline ran out of food,
served tea and coffee without milk or sugar, ran out of health and entry
forms for China. Minutes before landing at Beijing International Airport we
were offered a yoghurt! When I asked the steward what his airline intended
to do to improve this awful situation, he could only shrug his shoulders and
say sorry!
The world still needs Deming badly!
Your Faithfully,
Colin Cherry
