Dr. Deming would have been proud of the recent posts by Colin Cherry and Will
Decker. The questions they ask about quality today is the same questions
that were being asked when "if Japan can why can't we" was released. The
interesting part of the recent posts is that the are articulating that American
companies are doing the same thing that the auto companies accomplished. Nothing.
Our companies today assume that we as buyers have no other alternatives and we
will accept what ever level of quality, or severe lack of, that they provide.
This is true in telecommunications, airline, HMO's and almost any service or
product industry you can describe.

If one looks at the auto industry today and sees how quality changed the
market place forever one can look down the road to continuing loss of other
industries based on poor quality. While Dr. Demings messages may not be in "vogue'
right now with the leadership teams it certainly is gaining a new voice from
consumers. We are all looking for new levels of quality and when we find it we
are gone from the present providers forever. Brand loyalty has no meaning
when low quality is the norm.

My hope is to again see American consumers demand quality and then we will
see a new emergence of the Deming's theories about quality. He may no longer be
with us but his theories are still with us. It is up to us now to all instill
a new energy to his teachings.
