Dr Deming was very clearly against pay for performance at either an
individual or team level. His views on profit sharing were quite different.
He once told me "If a company has made a profit, why not share it?".
Implicit in this statement (I believe) was the assumption that EVERYONE in
the company would take a share.
My advice to clients here in the UK is to share it out equally - that is
everyone gets the same cash amount. So far only one client has taken that
bold step, and with great success. Most others take the softer option of
sharing it out as a percentage of basic pay.
I think this is an important topic, I am happy to discuss it further here,
or on the back channel.
