Hi Tony,
Seems to me that Six Sigma focuses a bit too much on "results" in the
current paradigm. It's great if what matters is what the world
currently thinks is what matters. So if you are doing Six Sigma
"projects" then you can measure the "results" of these projects.
However, if you are striving for true excellence - involving a true
transformation - then that won't happen through "projects" (and the
"results" will be the joint successes that flourish when management is
transformed). I do not believe that Six Sigma - as currently deployed -
will result in the necessary transformation (although it might make you
better than your competitors - it won't satisfy Deming's points and will
come far short of what COULD be done).
I'm spending 4 days with some colleagues on some of these thoughts in
March - I let you know if we come up with anything else related to this.
However, on the whole, I agree with Deming's view. Having said that, I
have seen performance-linked pay that worked - but the remuneration was
linked to "results" that do not feature in the current world paradigm of
success (things to do with personal development rather than financial
figures).
Great subject - thanks for raising it,
Em :-)
