Let me echo Jonathan's remarks about the primary purpose of the red
beads experiment
being sociological. I speak from personal experience. When I first
saw the red bead
experiment I had just published my own book on statistical inference
("Rational Descriptions,
Decisions and Designs, Pergamon 1969). At first I thought it
unnecessary and then
I began to be conscious of my own reactions to it. I found myself,
at a subconscious
level, momentarily thinking deterministically, trying to guess the
next color based
on the previous history of colors all the while knowing better.
The purpose , as Jonathon said, is to help people change paradigms.
