Surely all it demonstrates is that sampling produces variation in
the results? The samples are not the output of the process, they are
the result of a further stage. Most trainees in a factory faced with
this experiment in a quality training session will claim that the
results are obvious and that sampling variation is to be expected.
Any idea that the results are the 'fault' of the operator are easily
dismissed.
If the idea of the experiment is to show that operators don't
necessarily affect the results of a manufacturing process, this is
wrong. However automatic the process is, wherever humans are
involved their attitudes and diligence make a difference - this is
common experience in any factory.
I'm still far from convinced that spending a couple of hours out of
a (usually too) short quality training session on the RBE pays off.
