An adiabatic expansion produces a decrease in temperature, not an increase.
If it is non adiabatic, heat will be absorbed from the surroundings, not
liberated.  Compressing a gas will liberate heat ... try pumping up a
bicycle tyre.  This is the principle used in refrigerators.
