I always use the np-chart for the Red Bead data, although I have some evidence (5000 paddles' worth) that suggests that you get virtually the same results with an XmR chart, once you have around 30 data points (paddles pulled). When I suspect something close to the binomial, I will generally examine the data in both types of chart. I have found that you can learn different things from the different perspectives. If I am more interested in proportions than counts, I use the p-chart instead of the np.
