Thank you for taking the time to respond with your thoughtful email to DEN=20
(4-25-05) re Drucker. Juran and Drucker may add something to the discussio=
n=20
but they are just more of the same.=20
<Insanity: Do the same thing and expect a different result>=20
<Drucker & Juran: Do the same thing only better/harder/more disciplined>=20
Deming as you know was profoundly different. But since his death has Deming=
=E2=80=99
s impact faded? Just having some one compare him to Taylor (advanced 19th=20
century thinking) today is troubling.=20
Deming railed against the Five Fatal Flaws (my term not his) of Taylorism:=20
Five Fatal Flaws =20
1. Assume everyone is the same (e.g. work standards)=20
2. Focus on what's wrong, not what=E2=80=99s right (e.g. annual reviews)=20
3. Develop followers, not leaders (e.g. HR rules & regulations)=20
4. Fix pieces, not interaction of pieces (e.g. "coaching" trained workers)=20
5. Set up insurmountable barriers to pride (e.g. "pay for performance")=20
Note #1: Each of these flaws by itself is fatal (long term). Most Western=20
Corporations do all five.=20
Note #2: As Deming knew, these flaws can't be rehabilitated because the=20
approach is all wrong=20
Note #3: Our education system is plagued with these same five flaws (e.g.=20
tests, grades, standards)=20
