With regard to Petter Ogland's comment on prediction, seems to me that
regression analysis is primarily an enumerative study while SPC is an
analytical study. Petter hits the nail on the head when he suggests that
SPC is after stable processes. However, it seems that Petter misses
Shewhart's point that one of the gems of SPC is the ability to disclose for
us very quickly and simply the process that is not stable. The nut is the
power of SPC to put money to the bottom line. Earlier this year a student
of mine put $200,000 annually to the bottom line of his new employer by
implementing SPC in the company's sales forecasting process.
