Information theory

John Hunter has mentioned the contributions from George Box in the
understanding and development of the Deming/Shewhart concepts. Reading Box
& Luceno's "Statistical control by monitoring and feedback adjustment"
(Wiley, 1997), I get the impression that Box tends to interpret Shewhart
within the framwork of Claude Shannon's information theory, using concepts
as signal/noise for describing "special cause" and "common cause" variation.

Somebody on this list mentioned that Deming was quite aware of the
implications of his theory with respect to music. Does this mean that
Deming was actually thinking of SPC and quality engineering as information
theory?

It suddenly struck me that this may be a very natural and quite powerful way
of understanding the Deming Philosophy.
