SV: DEN and Six Sigma



John Hunter makes some very interesting points on how the Deming philosophy
relates to Six Sigma and Lean.  A paradox, as I see it, is that Six Sigma is
very much based upon the SPC chart and the tools used by Shewhart and
Deming, while not, as I can see anyway, particularily compliant with the
Deming philosophy.  Six Sigma, as far as I can see, consists of giving
statistical methods to people who know nothing of statistical thinking.

Lean, on the other hand, does not emphasise statistical tools at all, but
works within an idiom of statistical thinking in the Deming sense, i.e.
seeing the world as process and variation.

As Jim Clauson pointed out in his attachment to Hunter's mail, during the
most recent years, something called "Lean Six Sigma" has begun to develop.
Is this the closest thing to Deming Management we have today?
