Peter,
Many thanks for your insightful suggestions. You are quite right in your
observation that there is more going on in a performance than meets the eye.
Perhaps it is a truism that the perfection one seeks may rarely be found,
and that may apply to our example of a symphony orchestra; one or more
individuals may be "at their best" on a given night, and this may yield an
unforgettable performance, as viewed by the audience. I'm glad you pointed
out that there is always interpretation going on, a little stress here, a
little less there, accent, check the conductor, too much, too
little...smile, frown...sweat beads galore. Who would want such a life? HA!
Your mention of the rehearsals is right on the mark, and the individual
struggle to master one's instrument may be joined to the ultimate desire to
express that mastery in the context of a medium as the orchestral. Yes it is
hard work but who would think of stopping?
As for the theater, well...blocking is surely an important element isn't it.
Quite a bit easier on camera than on-stage when blood pressure is up and
costumes uncooperative, eh?
Again, let's not have a bad symphony...only a better one surely.
Many thanks.
John
