JDK has a point, Topica or smartgroups.com or similar may indeed be among
the many options for a moderated or unmoderated future.
Such a choice would raise a number of questions. To pick just one example
... if the community at large or any individual user felt that the archive
had a value then what would be the risk to that archive if the discussion
group itself were to move to an alternative delivery mechanism such as one
of the freebies mentioned above?

There are many other issues.

I suppose my concern is that we don't fill a hole with another hole.
