RE: THE DEN

Re JDK's posting: THE DEN

The topic of Web-based v.s. the DEN as we all know it has come up in the past.; I think JD Kromkovski stirred a lively debate at the time he suggested the web-based option.

I subscribe to two lists: The one is the DEN, moderated and guided by a well-defined aim. The other is ODNET. ODNET is not moderated.

To me there are two important issues wtr discussion groups:

1. Digression: This happened on ODNET with George Bush's re-election. Most people on the list expressed their disappointment and this carried on for weeks. Nothing but the American Presidential election and the invasion of Iraq. What does that have to do with Organisational Development?

2. Momentum: A discussion can only have a meaningful outcome if there is momentum, and to have that we do not need long periods of silence. One idea sparks another. Evident of this is the DEN discussion "A Specific Example"

This discussion could not have had any impact if there was a one-month silence right in the middle of it.

I have nothing but admiration for Jim Clauson for the time he invested in the DEN and I fully appreciate his effort and, believe me, I understand how life can get in the way.

Both types of discussion groups have their advantages and disadvantages. I say if someone takes the time to set up a we-based discussion forum, I'll joint. I will also remain a subscriber to the DEN as we know it. Why not have both and see how it goes? But whatever we do, we must get the list/s to carry on.

regards
