Ivan Webb writes interestingly on quality in education, saying things like schools are not factories. But isn't mass production the basis of Shewhart's way of thinking? Isn't Deming saying that we should produce PhD students the same way that the Coca Cola company produces cans of soda?
In "The New Economics" Deming talks about the challenge and future of SPC being putting it to use for the evaluation of people. He is upset with the gold star system because it sanctions randomly without any understanding of whether the processes are stable or not.
The examples I've seen in attempts on introducing quality in education seem to miss the SPC issue completely, only focusing on introducing more paperwork.
