RE: Hillside Yellers?

>From Peter A Hunter
I have to agree with Jack that we could easily be mistaken for a group of
teachers that have become directionless through a lack of Students.

Perhaps if we cast back and take a leaf out of Deming's book we might
realise that Deming did not come to pre eminence through his teaching. His
laurels were earned after he had made a difference doing, and even then his
teachings were still resisted in North America.

There was a programme in the "In Business" series on the BBC Radio 4
recently that laid some very important groundwork.

The programme, through the words of the Gurus including Deming, of the last
century, confirmed the basis of our disquiet with conventional command and
control management techniques.

All of the voices talked about releasing the ingenuity and creativity of the
workforce through autonomy using the exact words that sometimes have been
attributed to Deming.

But as Peter Drucker said in a recorded interview, "Everybody says that
People are our most important asset, then they go ahead and sack them
anyway".

Peter said that he had been preaching the same message for the last 50 or 60
years, that "Human beings are the resource and not the cost", but that in
all that time, all of his preaching had had almost no impact.

He too realised that he was yelling from the hillside.

In order for people to listen we have to stop telling them what we want them
to hear.
Instead we have to make them curious about what is possible.
Only then will they ask the question "How can I do that?"

Then can we show them.

          Yours
