I'm not quite certain how Petter arrives at some of his conclusions
about what I've discussed here.
However, I'll summarize what I've
concluded with this: Because CEO's are focused on the short term,
they are seldom interested in efforts that show payoffs over years
rather than days. I have absolute confidence and deep personal
experience that proves Deming's approach to thinking and management
works flawlessly when implemented well.
As for other improvement methods...many of them work! Few of them
are intrinsically bad. Many are poorly implemented or abandoned
before the payoff. Lean, six sigma, Crosby, ISO, competing against
time, Juran...all of them can help when done the right way for the right
reasons. Pursued for the wrong reasons, they can be costly disasters.
Few companies have the discipline and patience to use methods as
Toyota has--lean or otherwise.
