Gordon - There is a new book published in the U.S. that should give
you solace and encouragement. It's "Engaging Communication ,
Transforming Organizations – Scholarship of Engagement in Action",
edited by Jennifer Lyn Simpson and Pamela Shockley-Zalabak, Hampton
Press Inc., Cresskill, NJ. It's a collection of papers by scholars in
organizational communication who believe very much in being involved
in the workplace and feeing backing to their teaching new insights
from those "engaged" experiences. This, the book holds, is the way it
has to be done. Too much is changing to have separate realms anymore.
The second chapter, "Bridging Theory and Practice in Organizational
Communication" by David Seibold – as far as I have gotten in the book
so far – bears on the situation you describe in Scotland. You've got
company in the U.S.!
