I saw your posting on the DEN and your frustration. I will support the
theory that Dr. Deming put forward of beware the unmanned computer. An
automated routine, spitting out the most elegant and accurate control
charts will accomplish nothing if the workers and managers do not know
what to do as a result.
I am a little wary of if a program could be developed that could
understand all of the various trend rules (7 in a row, 4 of 5, 2 of 3,
etc). Also, would it know when to rebaseline? How to develop an
initial baseline? But, perhaps it could be done. Personally, I prefer
to evaluate the rules myself and it forces me to actually LOOK at each
chart at least for a few seconds. Errors creep into data processing,
more than I would like to admit. But usually I can catch them before
anyone else does.
I sent to Alan offline a few thoughts here on what we are doing here
with a SPC based dashboard built through Excel. Using more generic web
based tools could be of advantage, but for now the Excel works fine -
though requires me to run it.
Alan, I would be interested in seeing a copy of your paper if you could
email it. I have several papers from here I could email if anyone is
interested in the subject of dashboards made based upon SPC.
