This seems to be a common phenomenon in meetings. A person will introduce an
idea and everyone feels obligated to tell him/her why it wouldn't work.
There was a commercial on TV for collaboration SW a while back that
incorporated a black rocket. When the participants at the meetings began to
exhibit the "why it won't work" behavior the "good" guy would reach down and
grab his model rocket and put it in the middle of the table. People would
immediately change their behavior and begin to see if they could contribute
something to the idea that had been introduced.
I actually tried this at work. I made a one-foot black rocket from
construction paper. I pulled it out when a person offered an idea for
discussion. It seemed to work, at least for a while. People realized they
were in a "rut." They had forgotten how to contribute to each others ideas
by adding ideas, adding other possible applications or other possible
benefits.
Does anybody remember that commercial? I would like to find a video of it to
help people have more productive and pleasant meeting.
