I'm trying to compare and understand the differences between Shewharts Plan-do-check cycle (1938) and Kurt Lewin's Action Research (1946). Both seem to be influenced of the field theory of physics of the time, and perhaps influenced by Buddhism as Schopenhauer was an important influence for people like Einstein and Heisenberg. Is Action Research and the Shewhart cycle the same thing?
Why did Deming add "act" to Shewhart's plan-do-check cycle? Doesn't this make things more confusing than clear?

[Moderator's Note: It has always been my understanding that the PDCA Cycle was developed
by Shewhart in the late 30's. I am also of the understanding that Deming later modified
Shewhart's cycle to the PDSA cycle - I have never found any direct reference, by Deming,
to his calling the cycle anything but PDSA.
The literature and the internet blend the 2 without
citation. If anyone has Shewhart or Deming citations to assist here - please send them in. ]
