S Cheek asks what do we mean by a "system" and what did Deming mean by a system.  As far as I can see, Deming referred to Ackoff and Churchman, meaning that he saw systems thinking from the perspective of Operations Analysis which can be seen as a special case of General Systems Theory (GST) as described by Bertalanffy, Boulding, Klir, Laszlo, Miller, Beer, Wiener, Skyttner etc.
   
  In other words, if we are interesting in understanding the "religion" of Deming, then I believe GST is the place to look.
