Vladimir Shper suggests one could compare Taylor to Newton's physics while Deming would be more like Einstein's physics.  I don't think so, but if we read Wiener's introduction to "Cybernetics" (1949), I think there is something important in Vladimir's suggestion.
   
  Wiener is saying that it was Gibbs and not Einstein that were the most important people in creating a change in paradigm in modern physics, meaning that the revolution in 20th century physics was the development of statistical physics and statistics in general.
   
  While Taylor is clearly a "statistical thinker", having a statistical intuition that seems much more profound than that of Shewhart and Deming, the creation of modern statistics (Fisher, Neyman etc), the basis for the work of Shewhart and Deming, were done after the time of Taylor.  Even though he had the intuition, he didn't have the tools.  I think here is where the main contribution of Shewhart and Deming lies.  They were able to lift Scientific Management to new heights as they had better scientific tools and could consequently make management even more scientific.
