I feel the message Mark is trying to tell us is that in order to understand Deming we really need to understand Shewhart and the people Shewhart refers to.  As has been pointed out several times, Deming was fonding of the Socratic dialogues, confronting people and saying preposterous thinks in order to make people think and help them onto the path towards great management thinkers like Shewhart and Taylor.
