Re: den.list-d Digest V2006 #36 About Education

I think blaming the politicians is not come close to the whole problem. One
needs to look at our Schools of Education in our universities as to what
makes a teacher verse subject matter expert, as well as unions and school board
employment requirements. I am still amazed how it takes a college degree just
to teach in grade school as if the teacher must be that much smarter than
his/her students, or all the courses for a college degree as if they are
actually relevant or add meaning full value, and yet every morning the weatherman
says ...the sun arose at......this morning and will set at.....

The stupid thing politicians do is try to equate, as if to justify,
education quality is some how directly related to money spent per child.

I do agree we should start over and the first step is to recognize each
child as educationally raw material to be transformed over time, and the Theory
of Variation is in full play along with Deming's definition of Theory of
Knowledge (people learn in different ways at different times for different
reasons. We should redefine the aim of providing a public education which is not to
have a winning sports team or beauty queen.

As I see it, as long as politicians, rather than the professionals control
education (an health care) the education system will continue to focus on
short term, frequently unmeasurable goals. No one can argue with leaving no
child behind. But is the sole way to measure success a single evaluation
held at the end of the term
