Re: Need an operational Definition of Scientific Management

Jim Clauson makes a good inititative, suggesting should develop an operational defintion of Taylor's Scientific Management, and then goes to the crux of the matter, first listing the scientific tools and then the scientific principles. if we compare this with Deming, I would say that the only difference is that we add SPC (and other statistical tools that were developed after the age of Taylor) to his list, and interpret his four principles of in the light of what Deming refers to as the "system of profound knowledge".

Just like Deming, Taylor's main issue was how to use the scientific method for improving organizational performance. I think the excellent quotes from Jim Clauson illustrate this beautifully. Deming always refered to Shewhart as the master. I don't know if Shewhart refered to Taylor as the master, but I definitely think he should.

on scientific management. Just a starting point to define it in the
context of Schewhart and Deming. ]
