Dr. Deming did not speak Japanese (other than a few words). His
lecture in 1950 was in English which the Japanese recorded and then
translated. They published this lecture in both languages.
Deming visited Japan many times but did not live there. He had a
thriving practice in the United States and was a professor at NYU
Graduate school of business. It was rare for him to miss a class.
While I do not know the value of the medal (Gold being worth $616 per
ounce this morning) getting the medal was and is a great honor for
both the company and individual recipients.
I agree with you that Dr. Deming's concepts are still vital to any
company today.He went beyond the mechanics of quality to its source,
management.
