Re: Where is the Evidence?
Dear Frank,
What a nice question. I think most denizens were excited by it.
Indeed this is a common theme worth our own thinking(for me, I am
learning the way of Zening in English which origin Chinese meaning is
*displaying with one single meaning*, like the way Shewhart and Deming's
works show us, IMHO).
I personally like Deming's zen type answers to you and Hannabarger's
attached story. They are amusing, inspiring and challenging. It was
obvious your JUSE friends didn't visit zen temples frequently. No wonder
Deming would say* so what* to the winning of The Deming Prize.
(I hope You don't mind the way or the manner I am speaking English.
Anyway many Chinese are confused with the operational definitions of
accuracy and precision of NATO's striking *system*.And I am a Taiwanese
speaking Chinese and according to one of BADUG meeting notes that if I
cannot dreaming(or thinking) in English, I cannot start my real
learning(or understanding) of transformation.)
(DEN can be one of the temples with another name called *digital
enterainment network* and I am going to play my *trilogy of red
bead*--mind you, I reserve my right *to patent* this term...or I need to
pay Shewhart royalties, see attached)Since I believe life is ofen more
dramatic than than most novels, I like to *over-react* to your great Q
with my over-interpretations of Deming's willing workers.
One hour ago I read A Conversation with Cuthbert Daniel by Edward R.
Tuft. I can quote many interesting wisdom from it.I like to reframe them
as *There were no exact numbers. There was no mathematics. There were
only *what did he say for a system**.
For some reason(limited rationality and others), Deming only used a
small portion of his production system in his red bead drama. If we read
OOTC and TNE or Shewhart's works, it is obvious the red bead drama is
only a small portion of Deming's system concept or only the tip of a
dynamic system. So in addition to the willing workers we are used to,
there are many other workers like you and me( with some puzzles),
customers(in the whole product/service life cycle) and suppliers and
others(say, like the guys want to marketing *the miracles of
science*like DuPonters...)
I mean we can create many versions of my *trilogy of red beading*.And in
our *magic system* while we are reflecting the meaning of red bead
games, there are no true value, perhaps.(I copied H. Hesse's two great
books titles.Or we need tutorials for Myron's System and
Entropy...)Deming might like his friend C. Daniel's words:My experiments
were 16 times as good as theirs and half my contributuions came from
fatasy...
Dear Frank, thanks for your great book *Deming:the ways we remenber
him*.I enjoyed it very much. I hope we can continually writing its
second part. My contribution is my fatasy of *Deming:a novel*(after
Aragon's H. Matisse) and this mail is part of it.
Sincerely yours,
Hanching Chung
